Lower Saxony’s heated debate over forced poultry confinement to curb bird flu
A dispute has broken out in Lower Saxony’s state parliament over how to tackle avian influenza. CDU lawmaker Moormann proposed a statewide order forcing all poultry indoors. His plan immediately faced strong opposition from Green Party member Pascal Leddin.
Moormann, representing the CDU, put forward a bill requiring compulsory indoor confinement for poultry across Lower Saxony. He argued the measure would help control the spread of bird flu.
The debate highlights deep divisions over bird flu management in the region. Moormann’s proposal remains under scrutiny, while Leddin’s objections centre on animal suffering and the need for targeted measures. The outcome of the bill is still uncertain.
