Lübeck Mourns Fairtrade Pioneer as City Reaffirmed for Two More Years
Lübeck has lost a pioneer of its Fairtrade movement. Horst Hesse, a co-founder of the city's Fairtrade steering group, passed away on August 9, 2023, at the age of 87. Meanwhile, the city has been reaffirmed as a Fairtrade City for another two years, reflecting its continued commitment to fair trade practices.
Mayor Jan Lindenau praised Hesse as a visionary who embodied courage and perseverance in promoting fair trade. Hesse, along with Hans-Jürgen Reuß, founded the Fairtrade Steering Committee in Lübeck. Reuß, who passed away in August 2021 at the age of 87, was the founding leader of the committee.
Lübeck's dedication to Fairtrade extends beyond symbolic gestures. The city works with European municipalities on future-oriented projects through the 'Fair Hanse' initiative in the Hanseatic League of Cities. It also integrates sustainable procurement practices into its administrative structures. Examples of Lübeck's commitment include sustainable public procurement, the fair-bio-regional purchasing guide, cooperation with schools and cultural institutions, and participation in the nationwide Fair Week.
Lübeck's reaffirmation as a Fairtrade City underscores its ongoing dedication to fair trade principles. The city's commitment, led by pioneers like Horst Hesse and Hans-Jürgen Reuß, contributes to the global network of over 2,000 Fairtrade Cities in 36 countries worldwide.
