Ludwigsburg scales back light rail expansion amid rising challenges
Ludwigsburg’s city council has made a major decision about the future of its light rail network. On 19 November 2025, officials approved a revised plan that scales back the project due to financial and logistical challenges. The move follows months of debate over costs and practicality.
The administration initially proposed a route via Talallee, Kurfürststraße, and Martin-Luther-Straße leading to the central station. However, this option was deemed unworkable due to technical and spatial constraints. Another suggested alignment along Leonberger, Hindenburg, or Friedrichstraße was also rejected because of heavy traffic issues and the loss of public parking spaces.
The city’s updated plan means most light rail expansions will not progress for at least a decade. The Markgröningen–Möglingen–Ludwigsburg line remains the only active priority. City officials must now follow the new directive when voting on related matters.
