Lufthansa Supervisory Board Election: Johannes Teyssen Set to Take Over

In a significant development for Europe's largest aviation group, which includes Swiss, it has been announced that Johannes Teyssen is set to succeed Karl-Ludwig Kley as the chairman of the Lufthansa supervisory board. The election is scheduled for May 12, 2026.

Teyssen, currently the chairman of the board of directors of the Swiss energy group Alpiq, brings a wealth of experience to the table. Prior to his appointment at Alpiq, he led the German energy company Eon for over a decade. His past experiences in the energy sector may influence his leadership in the aviation industry.

Interestingly, Teyssen is familiar with Kley from their earlier days at the energy company. Kley served as the chairman of the supervisory board at Eon until 2023, before stepping down from the Lufthansa supervisory board in 2026, marking the end of his 13-year tenure.

The original candidate for the chairman of the supervisory board of Lufthansa was Teyssen, but no explicit information was found about why he relinquished his mandate earlier. However, it is now clear that he is back in the running and is expected to become the head of the Lufthansa supervisory body if elected.

Meanwhile, the former Airbus CEO Tom Enders, who was considered Kley's designated successor, has resigned his mandate with the Lufthansa annual general meeting in May of this year at his own request.

It is worth noting that Teyssen also sits on the board of directors of the British energy company BP. This international exposure and understanding of the energy sector could prove beneficial for Lufthansa's future strategies.

As the election date approaches, the aviation industry eagerly awaits the leadership of Teyssen and the impact he will have on Europe's largest aviation group.
