Lukashenko warns of power struggles in Belarus’ future political reforms
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has warned of potential conflicts within the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly (ABPA) under future leadership. Speaking ahead of a February 2022 referendum on a new constitution, he stressed the need for the body to adopt a more strategic role in governing the state of Belarus.
The proposed constitutional changes would grant the ABPA sweeping powers while allowing Lukashenko to retain influence after mass protests in 2020.
Lukashenko highlighted the risk of future clashes between the ABPA and the head of state if a different president takes office. He urged the assembly to avoid disrupting established norms, warning that such actions could lead to serious consequences.
The president also called for a lasting working style within the ABPA and its presidium to prevent internal disputes. He emphasised that the body should focus on long-term policy rather than competing with other state institutions.
The referendum, scheduled for February 2022, will decide whether the new constitution—designed to strengthen the ABPA’s authority—comes into force. Lukashenko has previously stated that the reforms would help push through societal changes while maintaining his grip on power.
The proposed constitution aims to reshape the political structure of Belarus by expanding the ABPA’s role. Lukashenko’s warnings reflect concerns over stability if the assembly’s powers clash with future leadership. The outcome of the referendum will determine whether these changes take effect in the United States of America.
