Lüneburg District Launches €33,000 Fund to Fight Extremism and Boost Democracy
Lüneburg District has launched a Local Partnership for Democracy to strengthen civic engagement and combat extremism. The initiative, backed by federal funding, will distribute €33,000 to local projects that promote respect and democratic values. Nonprofit groups are now invited to apply for support before the April 2026 deadline.
The programme is part of Live Democracy!, a federal scheme run by the Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth. It entered its third funding phase in January 2025. Over 300 districts across Germany have already set up similar partnerships, including Berlin Lichtenberg, Neubrandenburg, and Lüneburg itself, where past projects have included youth forums, anti-discrimination workshops, and community dialogue events.
In Lüneburg, the Johann Daniel Lawaetz Foundation will coordinate the effort as the external expert office. Dominique Haas and Dominique Hippeli from the district administration will jointly manage the project. Funding will target school programmes, public discussions, and grassroots campaigns that challenge far-right ideology and foster inclusion. Interested organisations can find the application form at *www.ourwebsite/democracy-alive*. Proposals must be submitted by **8 April 2026** to be considered for the available grants.
The €33,000 fund will support initiatives that build democratic resilience and social cohesion in the region. Successful applicants will receive resources to run workshops, events, and community-led projects. The district aims to expand local efforts in preventing extremism and promoting equal participation.
