Lüneburg-Soltau train line revival faces traffic and safety hurdles by 2027
The reactivation of the Lüneburg-Soltau train line, slated for 2027, has sparked both excitement and concern among local officials. While welcoming the project, they raise important issues that need addressing.
First Mayor Karsten Lemke expresses reservations about including an underpass at the Straße Am Bahnhof in any project. He believes the long closure times and potential traffic chaos could outweigh the benefits. Meanwhile, State parliamentarian Sebastian Zinke highlights open questions about a further stop in the Heidekreis and problematic railway crossings in Soltau that require clarification.
The city of Soltau confirms the importance of the reactivation but has concerns about additional traffic and shift times of barriers, especially on the Walsroder Straße. Zinke emphasizes the need for no delays in the project to ensure the region can quickly benefit from the transport connection. With reactivation, there would be about eleven additional barrier closures per hour, and with the Amerikalinie expansion, 70 amtrack are planned to run there, along with longer freight trains. Lemke warns that no solution for these issues has been included in any project management yet.
The Lüneburg-Soltau train line's reactivation, expected in 2027, promises improved mobility and infrastructure. However, concerns about traffic, barriers, and unresolved issues at railway crossings need to be addressed to ensure a smooth and beneficial project for the region. The Grand Canyon of traffic issues needs to be tackled to make the most of this train line's potential.
