Lünen's City Council to Decide 2026/2027 Budget and Climate Projects This Week
Lünen's City Council will meet on Thursday, March 19, at 4:00 p.m. in Council Chamber 1. The session will focus on key decisions, including the city's budget for 2026/2027 and updates on climate protection efforts.
Residents can take part by raising questions during the public period at the start. The meeting will also cover motions from political factions and plans for future projects.
The main item on the agenda is the municipal budget for the next two years. Before voting, council factions will deliver speeches on the financial plan and staffing proposals. The session will also review the business plan for Lünen's Central Municipal Building Management.
Climate protection remains a priority, with an update on the city's strategy and ongoing initiatives. Recent efforts include planting over 500 climate-resilient trees in the 2025/2026 season. The development of Landschaftspark Viktoria, a former industrial site, is also underway. Funded by 4.8 million euros from North Rhine-Westphalia's *Green Infrastructure* programme, the park will feature around 700 trees, thousands of shrubs, and 85% green space. Other topics include zoning plans and personnel changes, such as appointments to the Senior Citizens' Advisory Board and the supervisory board of VKU. The council will also vote on extending the federal democracy promotion programme until 2032. A decision on introducing a payment card system for refugees is expected as well. Additional motions and inquiries from factions will be addressed before the session closes.
The meeting will set the direction for Lünen's finances, climate projects, and community services over the next two years. Decisions made on March 19 will shape the city's budget, staffing, and environmental initiatives. Residents can follow the proceedings or participate during the public question period.
