Madagascar Makes Oscar History With 'Disco Afrika' Submission

Madagascar has made history by submitting its first-ever film, 'Disco Afrika: A Malagasy Story', to the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards. Directed by Luck Razanajaona and produced by Jonathan Rubin of We Films, the movie has garnered international attention, screening at over 60 festivals worldwide and releasing in more than 10 territories.

The film follows Kwame, a young man working in clandestine sapphire mines, navigating corruption in his country. Despite the political turmoil in Madagascar, with a recent coup led by Colonel Michael Randrianirina, the African Union has suspended the country's membership, the government promises free and fair elections within two years. This submission comes amidst these challenges, with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences currently vetting the submissions for eligibility. The number of declared entries to the category stands at 90.
