Magadan man faces prison for selling illegal unmarked seafood worth millions

A 48-year-old man from Magadan is facing criminal charges for illegally selling unmarked seafood. Authorities have seized over 377 kilograms of homemade products from his home and frozen assets worth more than 4 million rubles.

The suspect allegedly bought crab meat, whelk, salmon roe, and fish from poachers over several years. He then resold the products through preorders, building an illegal operation valued at over 2.3 million rubles. Investigators confirmed the scale of the trade before sending the case to court.

The man has admitted his guilt and expressed remorse for his actions. If convicted, he could receive a prison sentence of up to six years. This is the only documented case of its kind in Magadan between 2023 and 2026, though similar offences have occurred elsewhere in Russia. In 2024, authorities in Vladivostok uncovered 15 tonnes of illegally traded caviar. A year later, in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, another operation involved 8 tonnes of smuggled crab. Both cases were reported by Russia's fisheries watchdog, Rosrybolovstvo.

The investigation has now closed, and the case will proceed in court. The suspect's assets remain frozen as legal proceedings continue. A conviction would mark one of the few high-profile cases of illegal seafood trade in the region.
