Maharashtra forms Ethics Committee to regulate legislators’ conduct on official tours
The Maharashtra state legislature has set up an Ethics Committee to create a code of conduct for its members. This move comes after two high-profile incidents involving legislators: a cash seizure in Dhule and a violent clash inside the Vidhan Bhavan. The nine-member panel will focus on setting behavioural standards for lawmakers during official tours.
The committee is led by BJP MLA Chainsukh Sancheti. Its members include representatives from BJP, Shiv Sena, NCP, Congress, and nominated MLCs from BJP and the NCP-SP alliance. Their role is strictly limited to reviewing legislators’ behaviour while on committee tours.
The committee’s recommendations will apply only to legislators during official tours. Their report will not address broader disciplinary issues within the Vidhan Bhavan. The final code of conduct will be submitted to the state legislature for approval.
