Maharashtra To Conduct First Fully Digital Census In 2027, BMC Commissioner Named Principal Officer
Maharashtra has started planning for the 2027 Census, marking the first time the nationwide count will go fully digital. State officials have assigned key roles to administrators at every level to ensure smooth data collection. A new mobile app will also help streamline the process for the first time.
The state administration has outlined specific responsibilities for census officers across Maharashtra. District collectors and municipal commissioners will act as Principal Census Officers (PCOs). In Mumbai, the BMC Commissioner will take on this role.
Below them, divisional commissioners will serve as Divisional Census Officers, overseeing broader regions. Residential deputy collectors will function as District Census Officers, while tahsildars will work as Charge Census Officers. Sub-divisional officers (SDOs) have been named Sub-Divisional Census Officers, and deputy municipal commissioners from 29 municipal corporations will handle city-level duties. To support the process, a dedicated mobile application has been developed for real-time data collection. This shift to digital methods replaces traditional paper-based recording, aiming for greater accuracy and efficiency.
The 2027 Census will rely on a structured hierarchy of officers, from divisional to local levels. With digital tools in place, the state expects a more organised and error-free count. Officials will now focus on training and testing systems before the census begins.
