Mainz imposes strict new parking rules for rental e-scooters in 2026
Mainz is cracking down on poorly parked rental e-scooters with new rules starting March 1, 2026. The regulations aim to tackle the clutter and hazards caused by abandoned or toppled scooters across the city centre. Manuela Matz, the outgoing public order councillor, has pushed through the changes before leaving her post.
Under the new system, e-scooters can only be parked in 25 designated zones within the city centre. Each zone will hold no more than 300 scooters, capping the total number in Mainz at 1,200. Certain areas, including parts of the Old Town, will ban scooter parking entirely.
The city will carry out regular inspections to ensure compliance. Any scooters left outside permitted zones must be moved or removed by their providers. Three rental companies currently operate in Mainz, all subject to the stricter rules. The changes come as Manuela Matz prepares to hand over her responsibilities. Karsten Lange (CDU) will take over the public order department on the same day the new regulations begin.
The updated rules seek to reduce the mess and safety risks linked to haphazardly parked scooters. Providers will face penalties if they fail to enforce the parking restrictions. The city expects a cleaner and more orderly approach to e-scooter use from March 1.
