Wiesbaden Adjusts Traffic Flow in Mainz-Kostheim Due to Heavy Congestion

The city of Wiesbaden is modifying traffic routes in the center of Mainz-Kostheim to ease congestion caused by the closure of the A671's Vorlandbrücke. According to officials, local police have been directing traffic during peak hours since Thursday afternoon.

Following consultations with the district council and other authorities, several measures have been introduced. Left turns from the B40 onto the Kommerzienrat-Disch-Brücke will be prohibited during rush hour. The restriction applies Monday through Friday from 7 to 9 a.m. and from 3 to 7 p.m., though residents, employees of Essity, and other authorized vehicles will still have access.

Additionally, no-stopping zones will be established in multiple locations to improve traffic flow. Signs are expected to be installed Friday afternoon, affecting both sides of Hauptstraße between Münchhofstraße and Rektor-Stamm-Weg, as well as near addresses 123 and 125. A no-stopping rule will also apply to Winterstraße between Wilhelmstraße and Hauptstraße.

Increased Patrols and Adjusted Traffic Lights

The road traffic authority is also reviewing plans to extend the green light phase for vehicles coming from Winterstraße at the intersection with Hauptstraße and Maaraustraße. Waste collection services have agreed to schedule pickups outside peak traffic times.

Local police have announced a stronger presence in the historic town center to penalize illegal parking. Officers will also patrol during rush hour to prevent drivers from illegally turning from Mainbrücke into the western section of Hauptstraße.

City Urges Patience

Authorities report that the measures are already having a positive impact on traffic flow, with initial observations from Thursday afternoon and Friday morning confirming improvements. However, they emphasize that each step only redirects congestion rather than eliminating it.

There is no "ultimate solution" to completely divert highway traffic away from surrounding areas during a motorway closure. The road traffic authority asks drivers to avoid the area where possible and remains in close coordination with all stakeholders to ensure the changes are implemented as smoothly as possible.
