Mainz Restores 17th-Century Building After Years of Neglect
The city of Mainz has begun renovating a long-neglected, 17th-century listed building at Augustinerstraße 22. The private owner's non-compliance led to the city intervening, with works expected to take around three to four months.
The building, once home to the 'Schöner Brunnen' café and later a Chinese restaurant, has stood vacant for nearly 13 years. Its state was described as 'an affront' by Mayor Nino Haase. The renovation, carried out through a process called 'substitution', will restore the street facade and renew ceiling beams. The city aims to preserve the historic heritage and enhance the attractiveness of Augustinerstraße. Once complete, scaffolding currently restricting the pavement will be removed.
The renovation is set to cost the owner, who has not been named, as the city intervenes to ensure compliance with the 2024 order to repair the facade. Mayor Haase promised that the owner will reimburse the city for the expenses incurred.
