Mainz's regulatory authority transforms with 24/7 operations and expanded team

Mainz's regulatory authority has undergone major changes in recent years. Staff numbers have grown, new tools were introduced, and operations now run 24 hours a day. The service has also moved to a modern location, leaving behind outdated offices in the Stadthaus.

The authority faced heavy demands during the pandemic between 2020 and 2022. Despite this, it expanded its workforce from 68 to 104 employees by adding 41 full-time positions since December 2018. Officers were also given pepper spray pistols in 2019 to improve safety on duty.

A key development came in October 2021 with the opening of the new municipal guard station at Brückenturm. The move from the old Stadthaus offices brought better working conditions for staff. At the same time, the authority took on more responsibilities, such as event security and enforcing new laws on prostitution and cannabis—often without extra funding. From March 1, 2023, stricter rules were introduced for rented e-scooters in Mainz's city centre. Riders could only park them in marked areas, with some zones completely banning parking. By early 2026, the service began operating around the clock, further strengthening its presence in the city.

The regulatory authority now runs 24-hour operations and has a larger, better-equipped team. Its new base at Brückenturm and expanded duties reflect its growing role in Mainz. These changes aim to improve public safety and enforcement across the city.
