Major Shock in Saulgrub: One Mayor Candidate Withdraws, Two New Candidates in the Race
The race for mayor of Saulgrub has taken an unexpected turn after the leading candidate withdrew. Martin Kriner, originally nominated for the role, stepped down on Monday, leaving two political newcomers to compete. Bernhard Benedikt Jr. and Kerstin Löffler will now face each other in the election on 8 March.
Martin Kriner was first chosen as the nominee for mayor by his voters' association, though he secured only 54 percent approval. After discussions with his family and receiving anonymous calls with unpleasant remarks, he decided to withdraw his candidacy.
His exit opened the door for Bernhard Benedikt Jr., who had previously expressed interest in the position but stepped aside in favour of Kriner’s experience. Benedikt was officially nominated on 3 January and quickly announced his candidacy after Kriner’s withdrawal. Meanwhile, Kerstin Löffler, a trained geriatric nurse and mother of four, entered the race as a candidate for the group *DreiOrte – eine Stimme*. Her nomination came after a procedural error invalidated the first attempt. Both Löffler and Benedikt are newcomers to municipal politics, having never served on the council before. Löffler has pledged to focus on policies supporting the young and elderly if elected. The election, now a two-way contest, will take place on 8 March.
The mayoral race in Saulgrub has shifted from a single candidate to a competition between two first-time contenders. Bernhard Benedikt Jr. and Kerstin Löffler will vie for the position in March. The outcome will determine who leads the municipality for the coming term.
