Malaysia launches phased nuclear energy exploration for net-zero 2050 goal
Malaysia has officially embarked on a phased exploration of nuclear energy, aiming to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Minister for Energy Transition and Water, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, launched this initiative on November 13, 2025, aligning with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and National Energy Policy (NEP) 2022-40.
The exploration, guided by principles of safety, transparency, and sustainability, seeks to diversify Malaysia's energy mix and enhance reliability and affordability. Current efforts include bolstering the Atomic Energy Licensing Board's (AELB) capacity and fostering global collaboration to build technical expertise.
Decisions regarding nuclear energy will be evidence-based, considering scientific data, public engagement, and international best practices. This approach ensures a responsible and informed exploration of nuclear power as a potential solution to Malaysia's energy needs.
Malaysia's nuclear energy exploration, part of its commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050, is underway. The phased, science-based approach prioritises safety, transparency, and sustainability. The outcome of this exploration, informed by data and public engagement, will shape Malaysia's energy future.
