Malaysia to License Major Social Media Platforms by 2025
Malaysia is tightening control over major social media and messaging platforms. From 1 January 2025, those with eight million or more users in the country will be automatically registered under a local licensing system. The move aims to improve accountability and enforce compliance with Malaysian laws.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced the new rule under a 'Deeming Provision' in the Communications and Multimedia Act. This will classify qualifying platforms as Applications Service Provider Class (ASP(C)) licensees without requiring individual applications.
The automatic registration system will take effect in early 2025. It will apply to all major platforms meeting the user threshold, ensuring they comply with local regulations. The MCMC’s approach reflects broader efforts to increase oversight of digital services in Malaysia.
