Man arrested for extorting Hanover restaurants with violent threats
A 22-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly threatening restaurant owners in Hanover with violence unless they paid 'protection money'. The suspect demanded several thousand euros in a message sent on February 10
The case began when the suspect contacted the restaurant operators through a messaging service. His threats included serious acts of violence if payment was not made. Authorities treated the incident as attempted extortion with aggravating circumstances.
By February 25, 2026, officers tracked the man to Düsseldorf and took him into custody. The Hanover Local Court later ordered pretrial detention, citing a high risk of flight. The suspect reportedly has no fixed address in Germany. According to the 2025 Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) statistics, around 1,200 extortion attempts involving threats of violence were reported in Germany between March 2025 and March 2026. Most cases occurred in North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria.
The arrested man remains in custody while the investigation continues. Police have not released further details about the suspect's background or the exact amount demanded. The case highlights ongoing concerns about extortion attempts targeting small businesses in the region.
