Man arrested in 2022 fatal shooting of Granite City woman Jamya Dukes

A man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a Granite City woman over a year ago. Corey C. Ayers, 30, from East St. Louis, now faces serious charges after police took him into custody on Monday.

The incident took place on April 1, 2022, when Jamya Dukes was fatally wounded by a gunshot. Authorities launched an investigation into her death, which continued for more than a year.

Ayers was identified as the primary suspect in the case. On Monday, officers arrested him without incident. Prosecutors have since charged him with first degree murder.

The arrest follows a lengthy investigation into Dukes' death. Ayers remains in custody as the case moves forward. Legal proceedings will determine the next steps in the process.
