Man pleads not guilty in 2023 murder of missing teen Ataja Banks

A 22-year-old man accused of murdering an 18-year-old woman in 2023 has pleaded not guilty in court. Ian Millard appeared before a judge after his arrest on Friday, September 27, 2025. The case involves the disappearance of Ataja Banks, whose remains were discovered nearly two years later.

Millard was taken into custody on South Goose Bay Road last week. He faces charges related to the death of Ataja Banks, who vanished in November 2023. Her body was found in September 2025, though few details about her background are publicly known.

During the hearing, Millard told the court he had no fixed address. He had been staying with his father for the past six months. The judge set bail at $500,000, with strict conditions including house arrest and electronic monitoring. This is not Millard's first serious offence. In 2016, at just 12 years old, he was convicted of killing his mother and brother in a shooting. He was released from McLaughlin Youth Center at 19, less than two years before Banks' alleged murder. His next court appearance is set for April 10.

Millard remains in custody unless bail is posted under the given restrictions. The legal process will continue with his upcoming hearing in April. The case links two violent incidents years apart, with authorities now examining the timeline between them.
