Mandela Barnes kicks off Wisconsin governor race with affordability focus
Mandela Barnes has launched his campaign for Wisconsin governor, focusing on the cost of living for state residents. The Democrat criticised President Donald Trump’s policies during his announcement, framing the election as a fight for affordability rather than political ideology.
Barnes entered the race alongside several other Democratic contenders. Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez, and State Rep. Francesca Hong are among those vying for the nomination. State Sen. Kelda Roys, former Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. CEO Missy Hughes, and ex-state Rep. Brett Hulsey have also joined the field. Abigail Spanberger, a Democratic congresswoman, has declared her candidacy but remains the only one officially in the race before the primaries.
The Democratic primary will determine who faces the eventual Republican nominee in the general election. Barnes’ campaign has set affordability as its core issue, while opponents question his political stance. The race will test whether his previous experience as lieutenant governor resonates with voters.
