Marjorie Taylor Greene resigns from Congress amid political tensions

U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene announced her resignation from Congress late on Friday night. The Georgia Republican will step down on January 5, 2026, leaving her 14th Congressional District seat vacant for months before a replacement is elected in the upcoming election.

Greene cited frustration with the nation’s political climate and a recent falling-out with former President Donald Trump as her reasons for leaving. Her departure triggers a special election, as the U.S. Constitution requires all House vacancies to be filled by a vote—not a temporary appointment.

Greene’s resignation leaves her seat open for months, with no interim replacement allowed. The special election will determine who represents Georgia’s 14th District until the next full term begins. Voters in the region will head to the polls sooner than expected to choose their new congressperson.
