Markus Söder Tops German Premiers in 'Letters of Urgent Concern'

Markus Söder, the Governor of Bavaria, tops the list of German state premiers receiving 'letters of urgent concern', averaging 1.98 per day since taking office in 2018. This high volume may reflect his constant visibility during crises and public discontent, as suggested by recent criticism from Munich's mayor, Dieter Reiter.

Söder's popularity, however, remains high, ranking second nationally behind Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, according to an Insa opinion poll. Other premiers receiving high numbers of 'letters of urgent concern' include Winfried Kretschmann (Greens, Baden-Württemberg) and Daniel Günther (CDU, Schleswig-Holstein). Olaf Lies (SPD, Lower Saxony) and Hendrik Wüst (CDU, North Rhine-Westphalia) follow Söder with 1.12 and 0.79 'letters' per day, respectively.

Söder's high volume of 'letters of urgent concern' could also stem from his role as the leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU), a major political party in Germany. His constant presence in the media and during crises may make him a more visible target for public concerns.

Markus Söder's high ranking in 'letters of urgent concern' reflects his prominent political position and visibility, as well as potential public discontent. Despite this, he remains one of Germany's most popular politicians. The high number of 'letters of urgent concern' received by other premiers suggests that public engagement with state leaders is significant across Germany.
