Marl Honors War Victims with Volkstrauertag Ceremony This Sunday
Marl will hold its annual Volkstrauertag ceremony this Sunday, November 16, honouring the victims of war and violence. The central event will commence at 2 p.m. at Creiler Platz, open to all citizens. Mayor Thomas Terhorst and Benedikt Stelthove, a pastoral referent, will lead the commemoration.
This year's Volkstrauertag in Marl carries the theme 'To Remember Is to Take Responsibility'. The day will begin with wreath-laying ceremonies at various locations across the city on Saturday evening and Sunday. The main ceremony at Creiler Platz will feature speeches from Mayor Terhorst and Stelthove, followed by a wreath-laying tribute.
Adding a poignant note, the Marl-Lenkerbeck Youth Fire Brigade will share their experiences from a visit to the Hersbruck subcamp, offering a firsthand perspective on the past.
Marl's Volkstrauertag serves as a solemn reminder of the city's history and a call to responsibility. With wreath-laying ceremonies and the central memorial event, the city honours the past and reaffirms its commitment to peace and remembrance.
