Marl’s new mayor champions economic resilience at high-profile business reception
Newly elected Mayor Thomas Terhorst made his first major public appearance at the annual economic reception hosted by the Marl Business Club. Around 300 guests from business, politics, and local government attended the event, which aimed to foster strong networks and dialogue between these sectors.
The reception was supported by various sponsors, including Volksbank Marl-Recklinghausen, Deutsche Bank, Sparkasse Vest, and local businesses. Gerald Flanz, Head of Regional Sales at Deutsche Bank and Postbank, discussed the complex landscape of capital markets, touching on monetary policy, geopolitical uncertainty, and technological disruption.
Mayor Terhorst praised initiatives like gate.ruhr and Thalia's new operations for generating momentum in value creation and job growth. He also expressed concerns about the chemical industry's uneven competitive conditions and its impact on the Marl Chemical Park. Uta Heinrich, chair of the Marl Business Club, highlighted challenges faced by the industrial sector in the northern Ruhr region, including soaring energy and raw material costs and competitive pressure. Despite these challenges, Mayor Terhorst emphasised the resilience of Marl's economy, attributing it to the city's strong mid-sized sector.
The event provided an engaging evening with musical entertainment by the duo 'KlaVio' and Dr. Jana Emmrich. It served as a platform for dialogue and networking among local companies, politics, and administration, fostering a collaborative approach to addressing the city's economic future.
