Martin Modschiedler Elected as New Saxony Integration Commissioner
Martin Modschiedler, a seasoned lawyer and politician, has been elected as the new Integration Commissioner in Saxony. The 55-year-old, born in 1967, has been a member of the state parliament since 2009 and recently won an internal party contest against Sandra Gockel.
Modschiedler's election was met with praise from Saxony’s Interior Minister Armin Schuster, who lauded his predecessor Geert Mackenroth for his heart, integrity, approachability, and firm stance during his tenure since 2014. Mackenroth received a standing ovation and widespread acclaim in the state parliament and was honored for his outstanding service.
Modschiedler, a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), was elected with a clear majority as the sole candidate. His election is crucial for securing cross-party support, a key aspect for his tenure as Integration Commissioner. The Greens have set clear expectations for Modschiedler, particularly in strengthening local and district-level engagement to counter far-right rhetoric with facts and data.
Martin Modschiedler replaces the previous Commissioner for Foreigners’ Affairs and also chairs the hardship cases commission. His election signals a continuation of the strong commitment to integration and countering far-right sentiments in Saxony.
