Mass protest in Düsseldorf demands review of far-right parties on March 14, 2026
A demonstration calling for a review of far-right political parties will take place in Düsseldorf on Saturday, March 14, 2026. Organisers are demanding that the Federal Constitutional Court examine all parties classified as extremist by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV). The event has gained support from local democracy groups, including the Bergisch Gladbach Association for Democracy and Diversity (DeVi).
The protest is set to begin at 2:00 PM in front of the North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament. Participants from Bergisch Gladbach can join a group departure from the town's train station, Platform 1, at 12:33 PM. The demonstration follows the BfV's classification of the nationwide AfD as a confirmed right-wing extremist organisation in May 2025, though this ruling was temporarily suspended by the Cologne Administrative Court pending further review.
Several AfD state branches—including those in **Brandenburg, Thuringia, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt**, and most recently **Lower Saxony** (as of February 2026)—are already classified as **confirmed right-wing extremist**. Others, such as in Baden-Württemberg and Hesse, remain under suspicion. The Bundesrat has the power to initiate a constitutional review with a simple majority, but North Rhine-Westphalia has not yet backed such a move. The 'EXAMINE!' demonstration specifically calls for a full judicial assessment of all parties flagged by the BfV. Supporters argue that formal scrutiny is necessary to uphold democratic standards and prevent extremist influence in politics.
The event will bring together activists and concerned citizens to push for stricter oversight of far-right parties. If successful, the proposed review could lead to legal consequences for organisations deemed extremist. The outcome may also influence future political classifications and regulatory actions by the BfV.
