Mass protests erupt as Germany debates forced military conscription

A nationwide protest against the government’s conscription plans is set for this Friday. Youth and student group Junge Linke has organised the action, with support from the Left Party. Leader Jan van Aken has backed the strikes, calling them a justified response to forced military service.

The Bundestag will vote on the proposed conscription law on Friday—the same day as the protests. Van Aken criticised the government for prioritising military spending over education. He questioned why funds exist for weapons but not for repairing schools or expanding training programmes.

The protests coincide with the Bundestag’s vote on the conscription bill. Van Aken’s criticism highlights a clash between military funding and education needs. The Left Party’s support for resisters adds pressure ahead of the parliamentary decision.
