Mass resignations rock Assam’s Congress as leaders defect to BJP

Over a thousand Congress workers and several key leaders in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district have resigned in protest. The mass exit has left the party facing a deep organisational crisis in the region. Many of those stepping down are expected to join the BJP, which has been gaining ground in the area.

The resignations took place at the District Congress office in Dongkamukam, where workers marched in a public display of dissent. Among those who quit were district vice-president Joy Ching Bongrung, secretary Chhatra Teron, general secretary Anthony Teron, and assistant general secretary Jenichon Teron. Nine mandal committees also resigned en masse, further weakening the party’s local structure.

The leaders accused district president Augustin Enghi of poor leadership and ignoring internal issues. Their complaints centred on his failure to address organisational problems, which they claimed had left the party directionless. The sudden wave of departures has raised concerns among state Congress leaders, who are now struggling to hold onto support in Assam’s hill districts.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of the BJP is being linked to the mass exodus. Many of the resigning members are reportedly considering joining the BJP, attracted by its stronger organisational framework and clearer political vision.

The resignations have exposed deep divisions within the Congress party in West Karbi Anglong. With key leaders and workers leaving, the party now faces the challenge of rebuilding its base in the district. The shift could further strengthen the BJP’s position in the region ahead of future elections.
