Massive customs raid exposes immigration and tax violations in Ruhr region
Duisburg Customs Office conducted a significant inspection operation on 6 December 2024, focusing on businesses in Duisburg, Oberhausen, and Essen. Over 70 customs officers, assisted by local police and regional authorities, targeted establishments suspected of immigration-related offenses, such as undeclared work, tax evasion, and illegal gambling in hospitality venues. The operation covered a wide area, including Essen, Oberhausen, Mülheim, Duisburg, and the districts of Kleve and Wesel. Teams inspected hospitality businesses, kiosks, shisha bars, and cafés, with officers from the Federal Criminal Police (BKA) joining for the first time. The December crackdown underscores the persistent risks in the hospitality sector, with multiple seizures and dozens of cases flagged for deeper scrutiny. Authorities have confirmed that further legal action will follow where violations are proven.
