Matterr Secures €30M to Build Europe’s First Polyester Recycling Plant by 2027

Matterr, a specialist in polyester recovery, has received a significant boost with a 30 million euro funding decision from the Productive.NRW program. The company plans to build a small industrial plant in North Rhine-Westphalia, set to commence production in 2027. This project, backed by Minister Mona Neubaur, is expected to have an annual capacity of 10,000 tons of recycled polyester material.

Matterr's innovative technology focuses on recycling textile blends and multilayer packaging, enabling closed material cycles. The process involves depolymerization under atmospheric pressure, breaking down polyester into primary materials. CEO Melanie Hackler hailed the funding decision as a crucial milestone for the company.

The total investment for the plant is around 63 million euros, with additional financing sources besides state funding. The EFRE/JTF-Programm NRW 2021-2027 is one of the key financial contributors. Matterr chose Germany for scaling its technology, ensuring strategic independence with a key circular transformation technology.

The plant, once operational, will have an annual capacity of 10,000 tons of recycled polyester material. Matterr's technology, backed by significant investment, is poised to make a substantial impact on waste reduction and circular economy initiatives.
