Mayoral campaign banners in Wismar vandalized ahead of April 2026 election
Several large election banners for Wismar's upcoming mayoral race were vandalised overnight. The incident took place between Wednesday evening and early Thursday morning. Police have now opened an investigation into the damage.
The vandalism happened sometime after 6:00 PM on Wednesday and before dawn on Thursday. Oversized campaign posters at key locations—including Bürgermeister-Haupt-Straße, Schweriner Straße, and Lübsche Straße—were targeted. The full cost of the property damage remains unclear.
Eight candidates are competing in the mayoral election on April 12, 2026. They represent parties such as the SPD, Die Linke, CDU, BSW, and AfD, along with a citizens' group and an independent. Authorities have not confirmed which, if any, specific campaign materials were affected.
Criminal police are now gathering evidence. Anyone with details about the incident or possible suspects is asked to contact Wismar Police Headquarters.
The investigation is ongoing as officers work to identify those responsible. Residents with relevant information can assist by providing statements or leads. The election campaign continues, with voting set for April next year.
