The image shows a McDonald's restaurant with a sign on the side of it, surrounded by trees and a clear blue sky. The building has glass windows and a railing, and there are banners with text and images on the wall. The text on the banners reads "McDonald's" and the sign indicates that the restaurant has recently opened its doors.

McDonald's unlikely to return to Russia, says Vkusno i Tochka owner

McDonald's is unlikely to return to Russia, according to Alexander Govor, the owner of its successor, Vkusno i Tochka. The fast-food chain left the country in 2022, and Govor now believes a buyback would make little financial sense for the American company. McDonald's suspended its Russian operations in March 2022 following the outbreak of war in Ukraine. Two months later, Govor acquired the business and rebranded it as Vkusno i Tochka. The first former McDonald's outlet reopened under the new name on June 12, 2022.

Govor fulfilled his financial and operational commitments to McDonald's six months ahead of schedule. By 2024, his company had outperformed McDonald's previous sales figures by several percentage points. Despite this success, sanctions prevent direct communication between Govor and McDonald's.

A potential return for McDonald's would not mirror its past operations in Russia. Govor sees no indication that the company is planning a comeback. He also doubts the economic feasibility of exercising the buyback clause in their agreement. Vkusno i Tochka continues to expand without McDonald's involvement. The brand's strong performance suggests it has filled the gap left by the American chain. For now, a revival of McDonald's in Russia appears increasingly unlikely.
