Plans for MV anthem abandoned - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Drops National Anthem Plans

The state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has abandoned plans to introduce a common national anthem for the region. The Minister of Culture, Bettina Martin (SPD), has confirmed that there are no further ambitions to pursue this topic.

The initiative began in 2017 with a competition called 'So sounds MV', which received around 150 entries for a potential anthem. Kally Darm's composition, 'Mein Mecklenburg-Vorpommern', was initially selected as the winning song. However, the MV homeland association refrained from performing it and instead presents competition entries on its website. The song was later accused of plagiarism, leading to the prize money of 20,000 euros not being awarded.

In the absence of an official anthem, other songs are often sung in the region. 'Where the Baltic waves creep onto the shore' is a popular choice in the northeast of Germany. The 'Song of the Pomeranians', written in 1851, is also known and appreciated in the area.

Despite the abandoned plans, the region remains rich in musical heritage. While there is no official anthem for both parts of the state, traditional songs continue to be celebrated and sung by locals.
