Medvedev Warns of Nuclear Escalation as US-Iran Talks Loom
Tensions are high as Russia's war in Ukraine stokes fears of a wider conflict involving nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, talks between the US and Iran over Iran's nuclear program are set for Saturday. Russia's Deputy Chairman of the Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, has been vocal about these issues.
Medvedev dismisses recent statements from France and Britain about their nuclear arsenals as mere 'saber-rattling', claiming they have only 'meager strategic capabilities'. He warns that if the security situation in Europe worsens, countries like Germany, Poland, and the Baltic states might seek nuclear weapons.
The West, however, accuses Iran of secretly pursuing nuclear weapons. Today, expert-level consultations are planned between Russia, China, and Iran regarding Iran's nuclear program. Iran maintains its program is for civilian use and energy production only.
Medvedev also accuses the West of pushing the world towards a Third World War by waging a proxy war against Russia in Ukraine. He predicts the creation of new, more destructive weapon types and the acquisition of nuclear arsenals by new countries, making disarmament in the coming decades unlikely even if the Ukrainian conflict ends.
With Russia and the US holding about 88% of all nuclear weapons, fears of escalation in Ukraine persist. Saturday's US-Iran talks aim to address Iran's nuclear program, while Medvedev's warnings highlight the complex geopolitical landscape and the challenges of nuclear disarmament.
