Meerbusch Marks 87th Kristallnacht Anniversary with Solemn Ceremony
Meerbusch residents are invited to a solemn ceremony this Sunday, November 9, marking the 87th anniversary of Kristallnacht. The event, starting at 6 PM, will take place at the memorial on Kemperallee in Lank-Latum. Mayor Christian Bommers will deliver the commemorative address.
The memorial, erected in 2003, stands as a permanent tribute to the victims of Kristallnacht. It was created by local artist Wilfried Haverkamp. The ceremony will feature contributions from confirmands of the Evangelical Church in Lank and Meerbusch, as well as music educator Christiane Karagaschki.
Kristallnacht, or the Night of Broken Glass, was a pogrom against Jews in Germany and Austria on November 9-10, 1938. Jewish cultural sites and businesses were destroyed, and thousands of Jews were harassed, assaulted, or murdered. Stolpersteine in Osterath and Lank-Latum serve as reminders of those who perished during this dark period.
The ceremony aims to keep the memory of Kristallnacht alive and send a strong signal against forgetting. It is a call for tolerance and humanity, open to all residents of Meerbusch. Mayor Bommers' address will honor the victims and reflect on the importance of remembrance.
