Meiningen honors war victims in solemn Volkstrauertag ceremony on November 16
On Sunday, November 16, 2025, Meiningen will hold a joint commemoration at the Parkfriedhof cemetery to remember the victims of war, displacement, and violence. The event, which coincides with Germany's National Day of Mourning (Volkstrauertag), will take place at 11:30 a.m. at the memorial for the victims of flight and expulsion.
The National Day of Mourning, first proposed in 1919, is an annual day of quiet reflection observed two weeks before the first watch of Advent. It was initiated by the German War Graves Commission to remember all those who have lost their lives due to war and tyranny.
In Meiningen, the commemoration will be led by Mayor Fabian Giesder and attended by the city, the Evangelical Lutheran Church congregation, the Social Association VdK, and the Federation of Expellees (BdV). All citizens are invited to join the remembrance, which aims to honour the memory of those affected by war, displacement, and violence.
The commemoration on November 16, 2025, serves as a poignant reminder of the past and a call for peace and unity. It is an opportunity for Meiningen's residents to come together, reflect, and pay their respects to the victims of war and its aftermath.
