Memmingen's after-school care centre wins one-year reprieve amid transition concerns
Memmingen's Amendingen after-school care centre will stay open for at least another year. The decision follows heated discussions in the Cultural, Education, and Social Affairs Committee. Parents had raised concerns over the lack of clarity around the planned switch to all-day school care.
The centre, currently used by 24 children, was originally set to close by the 2026/2027 school year. Its facilities were meant to merge into the new all-day care model being introduced at the school. However, uncertainty over the transition left many families uneasy.
Parents argued that without concrete details on how the new system would work, they could not plan ahead. The committee's final vote to extend the centre's operation came as a relief to those affected. Meanwhile, preparations for the all-day care programme remain ongoing, though no public figures exist on how many children currently use alternative after-school options in the area.
The extension gives families another year before the shift to all-day care takes place. Officials have yet to provide a detailed timeline or structure for the new model. For now, the existing centre will continue serving its 24 registered children.
