Meow Wolf Workers Demand Better Wages and Conditions Amid Expansion
Meow Wolf, the immersive art company, has expanded its reach to multiple locations, including Grapevine. However, its growth has been accompanied by two rounds of layoffs in 2022 due to lower visitation rates and expansion plans. Meanwhile, workers at Meow Wolf GmbH have been negotiating for better wages and working conditions, with a recent demonstration highlighting their concerns.
Meow Wolf is known for its interactive art museums, often described as having an 'Alice in Wonderland vibe'. Despite its unique offerings, the company has faced challenges in maintaining visitation rates and has had to cut staff twice last year. Around 20 employees recently participated in an informational picket at Grapevine Mills mall, led by Daniel 'Moody' Joseph, a security officer and union member.
The union's demands include higher wages, improved working conditions, and better benefits. After nearly a year of negotiations, the union authorized a strike due to stalled talks and insufficient employer offers. Workers are seeking wages comparable to those at the Las Vegas location. Alexis Stewart, a worker, expressed concern about attaining livable wages in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Despite the demonstration, Meow Wolf has not yet reached an agreement with the union.
Meow Wolf's expansion continues, but so do the negotiations with its workers. Joseph hopes the company will return to bargaining with fair wage proposals. The workers' demonstration serves as a reminder of the ongoing discussions and the importance of fair compensation and working conditions in the arts industry.
