Merck KGaA Announces CEO Succession: Garijo Steps Down, Beckmann Takes Over in 2026
Merck KGaA has revealed a shift in leadership. CEO Belén Garijo, who has led the company for six years, will not have her contract extended. She will step down in April 2026, making way for Kai Beckmann, currently the head of the Electronics business area, who will take over as CEO starting May 1, 2026.
Garijo, who has worked for Merck for 15 years, navigated the company through the corona pandemic and years of crisis. She will remain in her post until April 2026 to ensure a smooth transition. Meanwhile, Kai Beckmann, a highly respected leader from within the company, has been appointed deputy CEO with immediate effect. Beckmann will continue to lead the Electronics business area until a successor is found. This change comes after Merck recently completed a billion-dollar takeover of US cancer specialist SpringWorks Therapeutics.
With Garijo's departure, Merck KGaA will have a new leader in Kai Beckmann starting May 2026. Beckmann's appointment as deputy CEO indicates a smooth transition of power within the company.
