Merkel warns: Europe must determine its own fate - Merkel calls for a united Europe to shape its own destiny amid global tensions
Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has urged Europe to take greater control of its future, stressing unity in the face of global conflicts. Speaking recently, she highlighted the need for financial strength, digital independence, and a stronger diplomatic presence on the world stage.
Merkel's call comes as the EU has already taken steps to bolster its defence role, particularly in supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression.
In 2021, Merkel first emphasised Europe's responsibility to shape its own destiny. Since then, the EU has reinforced its position through the European Peace Facility (EPF), approving over €6.1 billion in military aid for Ukraine by 2026. This includes training via the EU Military Assistance Mission (EUMAM Ukraine), launched in 2022, which has trained more than 70,000 Ukrainian troops by early 2026.
The bloc has also backed joint ammunition procurement under the 2024 Act in Support of Ammunition Production, allocating €500 million. Further defence cooperation was outlined in the 2025 Strategic Compass, though the EU has avoided direct combat involvement.
Merkel argued that Europe must combine military and diplomatic strength to protect its interests. She insisted that negotiations with Russia should not be left solely to the US, urging the EU to act as both a military supporter of Ukraine and a diplomatic force for peace.
Beyond defence, she pushed for Europe's independence in digital technology, covering both software and hardware. She also pointed to recent trade deals with India and the Mercosur bloc as proof of a resilient economy. Yet, she warned that true autonomy requires sufficient financial resources.
Her speech underlined Europe's duty to uphold democracy, the rule of law, human dignity, and shared prosperity. She called for decisive action, both internally and globally, with the EU speaking as one.
The EU has already expanded its defence role, from funding Ukrainian military aid to boosting ammunition production. Merkel's vision pushes for deeper unity, stronger digital sovereignty, and a more assertive diplomatic stance.
Her remarks reflect a broader shift toward European self-reliance in security, technology, and global influence.
