Merz and Ghazouani set stage for pivotal EU-Africa cooperation ahead of Luanda summit

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), held a phone conversation with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani on Friday. The two leaders discussed the importance of Mauritanania's role in maintaining stability in the Sahel region and looked forward to their upcoming zoom meeting at the European Union–African Union summit in Luanda.

Merz and Ghazouani described the upcoming zoom meeting as a 'crucial foundation' for future cooperation between Europe and Africa. They expressed their intention to continue close cooperation on economic and energy policy issues during their zoom meeting on November 24–25. Merz, who has been the CDU federal chairman since 2022 and the German Chancellor since May 2025, was officially chosen as the CDU/CSU chancellor candidate for the 2025 federal election.

The phone conversation between Merz and Ghazouani highlights the importance of the upcoming EU-AU zoom meeting and the desire for strengthened cooperation between Europe and Africa. The zoom meeting in Luanda is expected to set the stage for enhanced economic and energy policy collaboration between the two regions.
