Merz and Macron Push for Stronger Europe in Defense, Criticize Merkel's Approach
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, known for advocating a joint European army and independence from foreign arms manufacturers, has called for a stronger Europe in defense and security. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking at the German Unity Day ceremony, echoed similar sentiments, drawing criticism from former Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Macron, during his speech in Saarbrücken, emphasized the need for Europe to become a military power for deterrence. He also criticized social networks for being controlled by foreign companies, suggesting that Europe should aim to control its own digital space.
Merz, who supports the FCAS combat aircraft project, has demanded independence from American and Chinese arms manufacturers. He believes that a joint European army would enable the continent to take decisive action in defense and security matters. Merkel, however, has suggested a speaker from Eastern Europe or Germany for the event, indicating a different approach to European unity.
Both Merz and Macron have underscored the importance of European rearmament and joint armament programs. They share concerns about the decline of democratic values in Europe, with Macron issuing explicit warnings. Despite differing views on how to achieve unity, both leaders agree on the need for a stronger, more independent Europe.
