Merz and Macron Warn Against Growing Authoritarian Threat in Europe

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron marked the 35th anniversary of Germany's democratic reunification by warning against the growing influence of authoritarianism in Europe. They highlighted the threat posed by far-right nationalist parties and ideologies, such as the 'dark enlightenment' and the 'identitarian movement'.

Merz acknowledged that years of irregular migration to Germany have led to political polarization in the country, providing an opportunity for these radical parties to gain traction. Macron suggested that Europe should bolster its economy to counter the appeal of these parties. Both leaders emphasized the need for Europe to do more to counter illiberal, anti-immigrant parties gaining popularity in opinion polls. They warned that these parties offer radical solutions at odds with democracy and could undermine democratic values.

The 'identitarian movement', a far-right ideological group promoting ethnonationalism and opposing multiculturalism and immigration, is often linked with the concept of the 'dark enlightenment'. Merz and Macron consider this extremist, illiberal current a threat to European democracy and liberalism.

In their joint statement, Merz and Macron emphasized the importance of recognizing the value of living in a democracy under the rule of law. They called for more resolve to counter the spread of authoritarianism and protect European values. Their warning comes as a reminder of the ongoing struggle to preserve democratic norms and combat extremist ideologies in Europe.
