Metro Aviation secures deal with Airbus for potential acquisition of 36 H140 helicopters
Metro Aviation Orders 12 H140 Helicopters for EMS Operations
Metro Aviation, a renowned operator in air medical services, has made a significant move by ordering 12 H140 helicopters, with options for an additional 24, marking a significant expansion of its fleet. This announcement was made at the vertical lift industry show VERTICON in Dallas, Texas.
The H140, a 3-tonne class rotorcraft, is a versatile helicopter that offers numerous benefits for emergency medical services (EMS). The new helicopter features a spacious cabin, capable of accommodating up to six passengers comfortably, large sliding doors for easy access, and a tail boom and Fenestron tail rotor design that reduces sound levels.
One of the key features of the H140 is its advanced avionics suite, Helionix, which includes modern digital cockpit displays, a 4-axis autopilot, and enhanced situational awareness systems. This technology reduces workload for pilots and improves operational safety during demanding EMS missions.
The H140 is equipped with twin Turbomeca (Safran Arriel 2E) engines, offering improved power, fuel efficiency, and emissions compared to older models. This results in better single-engine performance, higher maximum takeoff weight, and increased payload capacity, allowing for more medical equipment or personnel onboard.
The latest models of the H140 also feature an innovative five-bladed rotor system, which increases useful load capacity by approximately 150 kg and improves ride comfort for both crew and patients. This design simplifies maintenance and improves reliability, crucial for EMS operational readiness.
Metro Aviation, as one of the launch customers for the H140, is set to benefit from these features. Bart Reijnen, President of Airbus Helicopters in the U.S. and Head of the North America Region, expressed his pride in partnering with Metro Aviation again in the launch of the H140 helicopter. He stated that the partnership would enhance Metro Aviation's operational capabilities.
The H140 helicopter is designed for performance, cost-effectiveness, and passenger and crew comfort. It is also sustainable, featuring fuel-efficient engines that are SAF-ready, contributing to lower emissions. The helicopter's rear loading capabilities allow for the use of different types of stretcher systems, including intensive care ones and transport incubators.
Metro Aviation, a global leader for multi-mission helicopter customizations, has been operating air medical helicopters and airplanes for healthcare providers. The H140 helicopter was designed with accessibility in mind, making it an ideal choice for EMS operations.
The entry into service of the H140 helicopter for the EMS segment is planned for 2028. With its advanced features and proven track record, the Airbus H140 is set to become a valuable asset in Metro Aviation's mission to provide effective life-saving services.
