Mexico City police arrest four suspects linked to drug trafficking in Iztapalapa

Mexico City police have arrested four men in the Iztapalapa borough after discovering them with suspected narcotics. The detentions follow a fatal shooting in the Santa Cruz Meyehualco neighbourhood on March 5, which authorities believe the suspects may be linked to. Officers tracked their movements before making the arrests in La Polvorilla area on Tuesday.

The operation began after police observed four individuals exchanging packages on Camino al Progreso and Camino a San Pablo streets. Their behaviour suggested possible drug distribution, prompting officers to launch a search.

Police followed the suspects to the La Polvorilla neighbourhood, where they conducted a security check. During the search, they found 60 small bags of a green, dry herb resembling marijuana, along with three mobile phones.

The detained men, aged 20, 22, 26, and 37, were handed over to the public prosecutor. The oldest suspect had previously faced legal trouble, having been summoned in 2020 for charges of negligent injury.

The arrests come amid ongoing instability in Santa Cruz Meyehualco, where organised crime and gang-related violence have persisted since the March 5 shooting. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the detained individuals are directly connected to that incident.

The four suspects remain in custody while investigations continue. The seized items will undergo further analysis to confirm their nature. Police operations in the area are expected to remain active as part of broader efforts to address crime in the borough.
