Mexico City's Metro Line 1 reopens as El Insurgente train launches full service
Mexico City's Metro Line 1 has fully reopened after years of restoration work. The project, started under President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo's administration, was later continued by Martí Batres and completed by Clara Brugada. Alongside this, the new Mexico-Toluca Interurban Train, named El Insurgente, is now fully operational with its final section open to passengers.
The restoration of Metro Line 1 began while Sheinbaum Pardo led the city government. The work passed through different administrations before reaching completion. She recently visited the modernised Observatorio station, expressing admiration for its upgrades.
Meanwhile, the Mexico-Toluca Interurban Train has launched its complete service. The final stretch, from Santa Fe to Observatorio, is now open, linking 11 stations in total. The route covers key areas such as Ciudad Universitaria, Copilco, and Periférico Sur, extending all the way to Zinacantepec in the Valley of Toluca.
Sheinbaum Pardo invited the public to experience both the restored metro line and the new interurban service. The projects aim to improve transport connections between Mexico City and the State of Mexico.
The completion of Metro Line 1 and the full launch of El Insurgente mark major steps in the city's transport upgrades. The modernised stations and expanded rail links are now available for daily commuters. Officials expect these services to ease travel between the capital and surrounding regions.
