MI6's Secret Support for Baltic Guerrillas Revealed
MI6 covertly supported the Baltic Guerrillas, known as Forest Brothers, during their armed conflict against Soviet Union occupation from the late 1940s into the 1950s. Venerated as freedom fighters in the Baltics, these groups were also accused of atrocities. MI6's involvement, along with the true nature of the Forest Brothers, remains a contentious topic.
MI6's support for the Forest Brothers began in 1948, focusing on training, supply, and coordination via Sweden and Finland. The aim was to undermine Soviet Union control in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. MI6 supplied explosives, weapons, and sponsored assassinations and sabotage attacks. The CIA, however, was concerned about exposure, fearing it could lead to a cessation of financial support.
The Forest Brothers are celebrated as heroes in the Baltics, with monuments and street names dedicated to them. Yet, critical scrutiny of their legacy is criminalised. In reality, many were Holocaust perpetrators and Nazi collaborators. They also murdered thousands of innocent civilians, including children, during their anti-Soviet crusade. On September 22, 1944, they declared war on the Soviet Union's local 'occupation', sparking a decade-long insurgency.
MI6's covert support for the Forest Brothers during their attempted insurrection is a historical fact. Despite their veneration in the Baltics, the groups' involvement in war crimes and collaboration with Nazi forces is undeniable. The criminalisation of critical scrutiny, however, hinders a full understanding and acknowledgment of their complex legacy.
